How to Remove Red Wine Stains

(Before you use store-bought chemicals to remove red wine stains, let me first warn you of one thing. Store-bought chemicals can have an adverse affect on our professional-grade cleansers we use on cleaning carpet. If you ever consider using a professional carpet cleaning company, you may want to reconsider using store-bought cleansers.)

First of all, don’t freak out and start rubbing the stain. Secondly, don’t use warm water on red wine stains, which will cause the stain to set permanently into the item you’re trying to extract it from. Remember when carpet cleaning: cold water and blotting are your keys to red wine removal and almost any other liquid removal. And always use a white rag. Colored rags combined with cleaning agents can end up dying your carpet, making the stain much worse.

You have many options when it comes to red wine removal cleansers, and they are in your own pantry. With more abrasive carpet cleaning agents such as hydrogen peroxide or vinegar, it’s best to test it out on a small, inconspicuous section of carpet before applying it generously to the wine stain to be sure it isn’t bleaching or discoloring your carpet.

How to Remove Candle Wax

I have two ways to do it.  The first way is the way I've always done it, and then I ran into an article in Country Living Magazine that's similar but a little different.  I'll show you both ways and you can choose which way works best for you.

My Way:  First, scrape off any dried wax that you can and vacuum it up.  Then, heat up an iron with the steam ON and fully dampen a white washcloth.  Lay the damp washcloth over the wax and lay the hot steam iron on top of the wax for about 5 seconds.  Check to see if the wax has absorbed into the washcloth.  If not, repeat the process until the wax is absorbed.

Country Living's Way:

Step 1: Freeze the wax

First things first: It’s important to remove candle wax from your carpet as soon as you notice it. The longer you wait, the harder it will be to clean the wax stain. Start by placing a plastic bag of ice or an ice pack on top of the spot. Allow the wax to freeze for about 10 minutes, making sure that the wax isn’t getting wet from your ice pack. Moisture will only make the stain tougher to remove.

How to Remove Nail Polish from Carpet

Removing nail polish from carpet is a tricky task.  However, no need to cry over spilled nail polish!  The most important thing to remember in your moment of terror is that you must not rub at the spot without first pre-treating it.  Avoid temptation, because scrubbing at wet nail polish with a cloth or paper towel will just distribute the stain across the surface and massage it further into the carpet fibers, forcing it to set faster.  Keep your cool and follow these tricks to remove nail polish from carpet.

Non-Acetone Nail Polish Remover

Attempt this first:  Soak a cotton ball with non-acetone nail polish remover and use it to lightly dab at the nail polish spill while it's still wet.  Alternate dabbing the stain with the cotton ball and a clean cloth or paper towel to absorb the remover and the loosening stain.  Never saturate the fibers completely with the polish remover; only apply enough to dampen the spot, repeatedly dabbing with fresh cotton balls and clean cloths until the stain has lifted.  If the stain has already dried, use the nail polish remover as a pre-treating solution to wet the stain, and then supplement with hairspray or dry cleaning solvents to provide extra power.

Never use acetone remover for cleaning nail polish off carpet that contains acetate, triacetate or modacrylic.  If you don't know what your carpet is made from, don't risk it.  Acetone can be harmful and cause more damage, including deterioration.

Dry Cleaning Solvent

Spot treat dry nail polish stains on a carpet using dry cleaning cleanser.  The compound cleaning agents that make up store-bought dry carpet cleaners come as a power, so work a teaspoon of the cleaner into the stain with an old toothbrush.  Let it set in for ten minutes or so,, and then rub in circles at the stain with the same toothbrush but, this time, wet the brush with water to further spot-treat the spilled nail polish.  The bristles will begin to remove the stain.  Wipe the area down with a clean dry cloth and, once the nail polish is removed, vacuum the rug to remove any remaining dry carpet cleaning granules.

Hairspray

Hairspray is so good to us stain-makers, but as you're scanning your haircare cabinet, make note that the most effective hairspray has a higher ratio of alcohol as an ingredient.  Alcohol-free hairsprays aren't going to cut through stains.

If you do have a product that fits the bill, moisten the nail polish stain with a little bit of water and then spritz the hairspray directly onto the stained area.  Blot with a clean cloth and repeat to wipe and lift the stain.
